The "Protecting the public in a changing communications environment" is a public consultation document published by the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith MP.
The consultation document seeks to:
- set out what communications data is and the role it currently plays in law enforcement, security and intelligence agencies and emergency services to protect the public.
- explain how rapid technological changes in the communications industry relate to the ability of public authorities to use communications data to do in the future what they can do now.
- set out a range of options for what the Government might do to prevent any loss of capability in this respect;
- examine the privacy implications of this work, and describe current and possible future safeguards against unnecessary intrusion into people’s lives.
